Lead(IV) oxide preparation

Preparation: Dissolve 10,0g lead(II) nitrate in 80ml water acidified with drop of concentrated nitric acid and slightly with constant stirring add solution of  2,4g sodium hydroxide dissolved in 50ml water. Heat precipitated lead(II) hydroxide suspension to 70-80oC and bubble with chlorine at the same time. (Do not heat it over 80oC or PbO will yield!) Decant precipitated brown-black product with diluted nitric acid (1:3) and then with water. Dry at 100oC.

Pb(NO3)2 + 2NaOH ==> Pb(OH)2 + 2NaNO3

Pb(OH)2 + 2NaOH + Cl2 ==> PbO2 + 2NaCl + 2H2O

Properties: Brown solid insoluble in water. Good oxidizier.
